Quantitative measurement of esterase D (S-formylglutathione hydrolase) in human research samples is supported by the Assay Genie Human ESD ELISA Kit, supplied in a 96 Assays configuration. ESD is a polymorphic lysosomal enzyme encoded on the long arm of chromosome 13, closely linked to the RB1 locus, and it has long been a marker of interest in forensic identification, population genetics, retinoblastoma linkage studies, and formaldehyde-detoxification research.

The assay uses antibodies raised against the human form of the enzyme, so it is appropriate for projects that require species-specific quantification and do not need parallel measurements in rodent or other mammalian samples. Common applications include determining ESD activity phenotypes in human cohorts, studying the glutathione-dependent pathway that detoxifies formaldehyde via S-hydroxymethylglutathione, and exploring expression changes in tumor biology, particularly where the 13q14 region is implicated.
