DFNB31 encodes Whirlin, a PDZ-domain scaffolding protein critical for stereocilia elongation in cochlear hair cells and connecting cilium integrity in retinal photoreceptors. Mutations in the WHRN gene underlie Usher syndrome type 2A and autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss, making quantitative measurement of Whirlin valuable for auditory and retinal degeneration research. Assay Genie's microplate-based ELISA uses matched antibody pairs to capture Whirlin from prepared human specimens, with calibrated standards supplied to generate a quantitative standard curve covering 0.156-10 ng/mL and a minimum detectable concentration of approximately 0.08 ng/mL.
