Beta-defensin 103A (hBD-3), encoded by DEFB103A on chromosome 8p23.1, is a 45-amino-acid antimicrobial peptide central to human innate epithelial immunity. This colorimetric ELISA kit from Assay Genie ships as a 96-assay format for in vitro research use only and supports quantitative measurement of the peptide in human specimens. hBD-3 is induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, TNF-α, and interferon-γ, as well as by bacterial lipopolysaccharide, and it exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive organisms including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative bacteria, fungi such as Candida albicans, and enveloped viruses including HIV-1. Beyond direct microbicidal action, the peptide signals through CCR2 and CCR6 to recruit monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells, linking innate and adaptive immunity. Researchers use this assay to investigate mucosal barrier defense, the marked upregulation of hBD-3 in psoriatic skin lesions, oral and respiratory epithelial host defense, reproductive tract immunology, and the peptide's dysregulation in chronic inflammatory and infectious disease. Reconstituted reagents and unused strips should be stored refrigerated until next use.
