CDK7 is a serine/threonine kinase that functions as the catalytic subunit of the CDK-activating kinase (CAK) complex, which activates cyclin-associated kinases CDK1, CDK2, CDK4, and CDK6 by threonine phosphorylation to regulate cell cycle progression. CDK7 is also an essential component of the TFIIH basal transcription factor, where it phosphorylates the C-terminal domain of RNA polymerase II to enable transcription initiation and elongation.
