About CKMT1A and Its Research Applications

CKMT1A encodes the mitochondrial creatine kinase isoform targeted to the intermembrane space of mitochondria, where it catalyzes the reversible transfer of a phosphoryl group between ATP and creatine. This reaction is central to the phosphocreatine energy shuttle, supporting rapid local ATP regeneration in tissues with high and fluctuating energy demand such as the brain, cardiac muscle, and skeletal muscle. Changes in CKMT1A expression have been reported in neurodegenerative disease, mitochondrial myopathies, and several cancers, making the protein a target of interest for metabolic and biomarker research.
