Type II collagen is specific for cartilaginous tissues and is essential for the normal embryonic development of the skeleton, for linear growth, and for the ability of cartilage to resist compressive forces. Abnormalities in COL2A1 have been linked to musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and skeletal dysplasias, making it a valuable biomarker for studying cartilage and connective tissue biology. The protein is secreted and localised to the extracellular space and extracellular matrix, forming homotrimers of alpha 1(II) chains.

Performance specifications include a detection range of 0.156-10ng/mL and a sensitivity of 0.1ng/mL. Intra-assay CV is 5.1% and inter-assay CV is 8.0%. Recovery is 93% (range 87-99%) for serum and 95% (range 89-101%) for plasma.
