Reported performance figures include a detection range of 0.312–20 ng/mL and a sensitivity of 0.1 ng/mL, with intra-assay precision of 3.3% CV and inter-assay precision of 7.6% CV. Linearity has been assessed across serial dilutions of serum, EDTA plasma and heparin plasma, and spike-recovery testing in serum returned an average of 97% (range 91–103%), while plasma returned an average of 99% (range 93–105%).

Coagulation factor XIII is activated by thrombin and calcium ion to a transglutaminase that catalyzes the formation of gamma-glutamyl-epsilon-lysine cross-links between fibrin chains, thereby stabilizing the fibrin clot. The active enzyme also cross-links alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to the alpha chains of fibrin, and abnormalities in F13A1 levels are associated with bleeding disorders and other coagulation-related conditions.
