Unlike most cathepsins, cathepsin H carries both endopeptidase and aminopeptidase activity within a single polypeptide chain of approximately 28 kDa. The enzyme is central to intracellular protein turnover in acidic endosomal and lysosomal compartments and contributes to antigen processing, bone resorption, thyroid hormone processing, and extracellular matrix remodeling.
