Calcitonin is a key hormone that regulates calcium levels in the body and is primarily produced by the thyroid gland. The CALCA gene encodes peptide hormones including calcitonin, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and katacalcin through tissue-specific alternative RNA splicing.
