Congenital deficiency of any C8 subunit predisposes affected individuals to recurrent Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections, making accurate quantitation of C8B valuable for immunodeficiency research. The C8B polypeptide runs at approximately 67 kDa, and the mature protein is a glycoprotein that joins the alpha and gamma chains through disulfide and non-covalent interactions to complete the C8 complex.
