The assay recognises both natural and recombinant human Beta-defensin 4A and is intended for research use only.

DEFB4A, also referred to as Beta-defensin 2, BD-2, hBD-2, Skin-antimicrobial peptide 1, and SAP1, is a secreted antimicrobial peptide of the innate immune system. It shows antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and may act as a ligand for the C-C chemokine receptor CCR6, inducing chemotactic activity in CCR6-expressing cells. The peptide plays a role in defending against microbial infections and maintaining immune homeostasis, with dysregulation linked to inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.

The assay has a detection range of 0.156–10 ng/mL and a sensitivity of 0.045 ng/mL. Precision is reported as an intra-assay CV of 4.2% and an inter-assay CV of 9.3%. Validated sample types include serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell culture supernatants, and other biological fluids, with linearity and recovery data provided for serum, EDTA plasma, and heparin plasma.
