About BCAM

BCAM (Basal Cell Adhesion Molecule), also designated CD239 and the Lutheran blood group glycoprotein, is a single-pass transmembrane receptor belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily with a predicted molecular mass near 78 kDa. It binds laminin alpha-5 chains within basement membranes and is expressed on erythroid precursors, mature red blood cells, vascular endothelium, and a subset of epithelial tissues. By mediating adhesion between circulating erythrocytes and the vessel wall, BCAM contributes to vaso-occlusion in sickle cell disease and has been investigated as a biomarker in transfusion medicine.

Research Applications

This Assay Genie kit supports studies in sickle cell hematology, oncology (where altered BCAM expression has been reported in carcinomas), vascular biology, and erythrocyte membrane biology. It is suited to quantifying BCAM in conditioned media from cultured endothelial or epithelial cell lines, in matched plasma and serum biobank specimens, and in translational research workflows.

Kit Configuration and Workflow

The plate is supplied pre-coated with a human-specific capture antibody. Researchers add standards and diluted samples, then a biotinylated detection antibody and streptavidin-HRP conjugate. Color development is read on a standard microplate reader, and the working conjugate should be protected from light between additions. Unused strips should be stored refrigerated in the sealed foil pouch with desiccant to preserve antibody activity.
