Built for quantitative measurement of alpha-lactalbumin (aLA), the ~14 kDa calcium-binding whey protein, this Assay Genie kit supports research into human milk composition, lactation biology, and infant nutrition. The assay delivers an absorbance-based read-out across 96 determinations on a standard microplate and is intended for in vitro research use only, processing breast milk and related sample matrices without modification in many published protocols. Alpha-lactalbumin is the regulatory subunit of the mammary gland lactose synthase complex and is routinely profiled in studies comparing donor breast milk with infant formula, in milk allergy research where it acts as a major allergen (Bos d 4 in bovine milk), and in cancer cell biology investigations using the HAMLET protein-lipid complex derived from human aLA. Researchers also deploy aLA quantification to monitor whey protein fraction shifts in mastitis samples and to validate fractionation steps during dairy proteomics workflows. Reagent components are supplied in vials sufficient for 96 assays, and the assay is calibrated against purified human alpha-lactalbumin so results reflect the intact native protein rather than smaller peptide fragments.
