Also known as aldehyde reductase, aldose reductase (AKR1B1, UniProt P15121) is a monomeric cytoplasmic enzyme belonging to the aldo-keto reductase superfamily. It catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of a wide variety of carbonyl-containing compounds to their corresponding alcohols. It is a key enzyme in the polyol pathway, converting glucose to sorbitol during hyperglycemia, and its dysregulation has been implicated in diabetic complications, cataracts and cardiovascular disease.

Performance specifications include a detection range of 0.156-10ng/mL, a sensitivity of 0.065ng/mL, an intra-assay CV of 5.4% and an inter-assay CV of 8.3%. Linearity was demonstrated across 1:2 to 1:16 dilutions in serum, EDTA plasma and heparin plasma. Spike-and-recovery averaged 89% (range 83-95%) in serum and 91% (range 85-97%) in plasma.
