ACTL9 is a testis-enriched member of the actin superfamily that participates in the assembly of the inner dynein arm and the sperm flagellar axoneme. Recessive loss-of-function variants in ACTL9 have been reported in men with multiple morphological abnormalities of the sperm flagella (MMAF) and asthenozoospermia, raising interest in ACTL9 expression profiling in reproductive and andrology studies.

Investigators studying cytoskeletal gene regulation, spermatogenesis, and flagellar biogenesis can apply this assay to compare ACTL9 concentrations between fertile donors and patients with idiopathic male infertility.
