LTB4 is a dihydroxy fatty acid formed from membrane phospholipids via phospholipase A2 and the 5-lipoxygenase enzymatic cascade. It acts through the BLT1 and BLT2 G-protein coupled receptors on neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes, and certain T-cell subsets, triggering chemotaxis, degranulation, and superoxide production. Quantification of LTB4 levels is widely used in research on asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, atherosclerosis, sepsis, and acute lung injury.
