Deoxynivalenol (DON), often called vomitoxin, is a type-B trichothecene mycotoxin synthesized by Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium culmorum during field colonization of cereal crops. Contamination of grain and finished feed is regulated worldwide because ingestion by livestock causes feed refusal, vomiting, and immunosuppression, while chronic dietary exposure through cereal-derived food products also raises human safety concerns.

This 96-assay competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay from Assay Genie provides quantitative screening of deoxynivalenol in extracted grain and feed matrices. The procedure uses a microplate pre-coated with a DON-protein conjugate together with an enzyme-labelled anti-DON antibody; chromogenic signal is inversely proportional to toxin concentration, allowing readout against a supplied standard curve.

Sample preparation consists of homogenizing ground grain or finished feed, extracting with an aqueous-organic solvent, centrifuging or filtering, diluting the supernatant, and loading onto the plate. Each kit contains the coated microplate, antibody vial, enzyme conjugate bottle, chromogenic substrate, stop reagent, wash concentrate, and calibrated DON standards in sealed vials.

Validated matrices include wheat, barley, corn, oats, and finished swine or poultry rations. Results are commonly reported in parts per million (ppm) or parts per billion (ppb), aligning with international regulatory limits for deoxynivalenol in cereals destined for human consumption and animal feed.

The kit is intended for in vitro use in food safety laboratories, grain inspection facilities, and feed quality control operations. Unopened components should be stored as indicated on the package insert, with working dilutions kept refrigerated and used within the stability period stated in the product insert.
