Osteocalcin, also known as bone gamma-carboxyglutamic acid-containing protein (BGLAP), plays a vital role in bone formation and remodeling; its levels can inform studies of canine bone health, skeletal disorders, and bone fractures.

The assay accepts serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell culture supernates, and other biological fluids, and detects natural and recombinant dog osteocalcin (UniProt P81455). Reported performance includes a detection range of 0.312-20 ng/mL and a sensitivity of 0.088 ng/mL. The target protein is secreted, has a molecular weight of 20.9 kDa, constitutes 1-2% of total bone protein, and binds strongly to apatite and calcium.
