The manufacturer reports a detection range of 0.156-10 ng/mL and a sensitivity of 0.052 ng/mL, with ELISA detection and specificity for natural and recombinant general vitamin A. Reported linearity for serum (n=5) ranges from 94-104% at the 1:2 dilution to 96-107% at 1:16, for EDTA plasma from 103-113% to 102-112%, and for heparin plasma from 89-99% to 100-110%. According to the manufacturer, vitamin A is a nutrient needed by the retina of the eye in the form of the light-absorbing metabolite retinal, which supports both low-light (scotopic) and color vision. It also functions as retinoic acid, an irreversibly oxidized form of retinol that acts as a hormone-like growth factor for epithelial and other cells.
