S100A8, also designated MRP8 or calgranulin A, is a small calcium-binding protein of the EF-hand family that heterodimerizes with S100A9 to form calprotectin, a major antimicrobial complex released by activated neutrophils. In cattle, S100A8 concentrations rise sharply in serum and milk during acute inflammatory events, making this analyte a widely studied biomarker in mastitis, metritis, endotoxemia, and experimental infection models.
