A methylcellulose-based hematopoietic colony-forming unit (CFU) assay medium from STEMCELL Technologies, the MethoCult Express formulation shortens total culture time while supporting robust erythroid and myeloid progenitor colony growth from human bone marrow, cord blood, and mobilized peripheral blood mononuclear cells in vitro.

Supplied as a 100 mL ready-to-use bottle, the medium contains recombinant human cytokines, fetal bovine serum, bovine serum albumin, L-glutamine, 2-mercaptoethanol, and methylcellulose in Iscove's Modified Dulbecco's Medium. Colonies including BFU-E, CFU-E, CFU-G, CFU-M, CFU-GM, and CFU-GEMM can typically be scored at approximately day 7 of incubation under standard 5% CO2 humidified conditions, accelerating workflows for drug screening, genotoxicity testing, and characterization of hematopoietic cell-therapy products.

For handling, thaw the bottle overnight refrigerated, then vortex thoroughly to redistribute the viscous methylcellulose before aliquoting 1 mL volumes into 35 mm culture dishes. Store the product frozen at -20 degrees C, protect from light, and avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Each lot is quality controlled using normal human bone marrow cells to confirm plating efficiency, colony morphology, and lot-to-lot consistency for research use only.
