BrainPhys Neuronal Medium N2-A & SM1 Kit

A chemically defined neuronal culture system from STEMCELL Technologies, this kit pairs BrainPhys basal medium with N2-A and SM1 supplements to support neurons under conditions that mimic the in vivo brain microenvironment. The basal medium features ion concentrations, osmolality, and energy substrates tuned to cerebrospinal fluid levels, promoting spontaneous action potential firing and synaptic network maturation in primary rodent neurons and human iPSC-derived neurons. The N2-A and SM1 supplements supply hormones, vitamins, and micronutrients without serum, reducing lot-to-lot variability for reproducible experiments. Standard protocols call for adding the provided supplement vials to the basal medium immediately before use, then refreshing half the working volume every 3-4 days to sustain cell culture beyond two weeks. The system supports disease modeling, neurotoxicity screening, and patch-clamp electrophysiology workflows in vitro requiring stable neuronal excitability.
