Description

A nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate supplied by STEMCELL Technologies, Zoledronic Acid inhibits farnesyl diphosphate (FPP) synthase (IC₅₀ = 5 nM), thereby preventing protein prenylation and osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. The compound also exhibits a high affinity for hydroxyapatite (Ki = 3.5 µM), allowing it to bind directly to mineralized bone. Supplied as the hydrate form with a chemical name of (1-Hydroxy-2-imidazol-1-ylethylidene)diphosphonic acid monohydrate, it has a molecular formula of C₅H₁₀N₂O₇P₂ · H₂O, a molecular weight of 290.1 g/mol, a purity of ≥ 95%, and a CAS Number of 165800-06-6. It is also known by the alternative name Zoledronate.

In cancer research, Zoledronic Acid has been reported to inhibit proliferation, angiogenesis, and adhesion to bone in several cancer cell lines, inhibit breast and prostate carcinoma cell invasion in vitro, and induce apoptosis of osteoclastoma cells in vitro. The molecule is referenced commercially as Zometa™ and inhibits growth of cancer cells.

The product is supplied as a crystalline solid, soluble in PBS (pH 7.2) at ≤ 5 mM. It should be stored at -20°C, protected from prolonged exposure to light, and remains stable as supplied for 12 months from date of receipt.
