From STEMCELL Technologies, this compound is a selective and reversible thiazolidinone inhibitor of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), with a reported Ki of 300 nM. CFTR is a chloride anion channel involved in fluid secretion in epithelial tissues such as the airway and intestine, and defects in the CFTR gene can lead to cystic fibrosis. When administered intraperitoneally in mice, the inhibitor blocks intestinal fluid secretion induced by cholera toxin, and published work has shown that it slows cyst growth in polycystic kidney disease models.

The compound has alternative names Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator inhibitor 172 and CFTR Inhibitor-172, with CAS number 307510-92-5, chemical formula C18H10F3NO3S2, and molecular weight 409.4 g/mol. Reported purity is ≥ 98%. It is supplied as a crystalline solid and is soluble in DMSO at concentrations up to 12 mM, with low solubility in aqueous media.
