A selective, potent, cell-permeable inhibitor of p38 MAP kinases supplied by STEMCELL Technologies. The compound inhibits p38α (SAPK2A, MAPK14) and p38β (SAPK2B, MAPK11) with IC₅₀ values of 50 and 100 nM, respectively. When tested at 10 µM, it shows negligible effects on a range of other kinases, including other MAP kinases such as ERKs and JNKs. As a pyridinyl imidazole inhibitor, it directly binds p38 MAP kinases in the ATP binding pocket.

The compound has the chemical name 4-[4-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-(4-pyridinyl)-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-phenol (CAS 152121-30-7), chemical formula C₂₀H₁₄FN₃O, and a molecular weight of 331.3 g/mol. It is supplied as a crystalline solid at ≥ 98% purity. Solubility is ≤ 750 µM in absolute ethanol and ≤ 45 mM in DMSO. The product is stable at -20 °C as supplied and should be protected from prolonged exposure to light; supplied material is stable as supplied for 12 months from the date of receipt.

Published research applications include improving the self-renewal ability of neural stem cells from NPC1-deficient mice, blocking adiponectin-mediated proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells, reducing BMP3-mediated proliferation of C3H10T1/2 mesenchymal stem cells, and inducing cardiomyocyte differentiation from human embryonic stem cells.
