A selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) distributed as the hydrochloride salt by STEMCELL Technologies. The compound displays agonistic (estrogenic) activity in bone cells while not stimulating estrogen receptor (ER) activity in breast or uterine tissues.

Supplied as a crystalline solid, the product has the chemical formula C₂₈H₂₇NO₄S · HCl and a molecular weight of 510.2 g/mol (CAS 82640-04-8). It is also referenced by the names Evista®, Keoxifene, and LY156758, and its systematic chemical name is 6-Hydroxy-2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)benzo[b]thien-3-yl-p-(2-piperidinoethoxy)phenyl ketone hydrochloride. Reported purity is ≥ 98%. The manufacturer indicates solubility of ≤ 190 µM in absolute ethanol and ≤ 19 mM in DMSO; the Safety Data Sheet additionally lists ~0.3 mg/mL in 1:2 DMSO:PBS (pH 7.2), ~0.1 mg/mL in EtOH, and ~10 mg/mL in DMSO and DMF. The product is stable at -20 °C as supplied and should be protected from prolonged exposure to light. As a general guide, stock solutions are recommended to be stored in DMSO at -20 °C, aliquoted into working volumes to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and prepared fresh before use. For example, a 10 mM stock in DMSO is prepared by resuspending 1 mg in 196 µL of fresh DMSO. The compound has low solubility in aqueous media, so for cell culture use the stock should be diluted into culture medium immediately before use, avoiding a final DMSO concentration above 0.1% to prevent potential cell toxicity.

Published applications centre on differentiation: the compound enhances osteoblast differentiation in mouse bone marrow and human osteoblast cultures, inhibits osteoclast differentiation in primary human bone marrow mononuclear cell cultures, and reduces endodermal differentiation (HNF-4α expression) in embryoid bodies derived from human embryonic stem cells.
