STEMCELL Technologies supplies this small molecule as a phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor with greater potency and selectivity than quercetin, the structure on which it is based. The compound inhibits PI3K (IC₅₀ = 1.4 µM) and also shows activity against casein kinase 2 (CK2), but not against PI4K, EGFR, PDGFR, MAPK, PKA, or PKC.

The product is supplied as a crystalline solid with a purity of ≥ 98%. Its chemical name is 2-(4-morpholinyl)-8-phenyl-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one, chemical formula C₁₉H₁₇NO₃, molecular weight 307.3 g/mol, and CAS Number 154447-36-6. It is stable at -20°C as supplied for 12 months from date of receipt and should be protected from prolonged exposure to light. STEMCELL recommends storing all small molecules away from direct light and storing with a desiccant for long-term storage. Solubility is ≤ 50 mM in DMSO, ≤ 50 mM in absolute ethanol, and ≤ 160 µM in PBS (pH 7.2); the compound has low solubility in aqueous media. Stock solutions in DMSO or ethanol are stable for up to 6 months if stored at -20°C, and should be aliquoted into working volumes to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. The stock solution should be diluted into culture medium immediately before use, and final DMSO or absolute ethanol concentration above 0.1% should be avoided due to potential cell toxicity.

Published applications include suppression of proliferation and self-renewal of mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells, promotion of differentiation to insulin-producing cells from mouse ES cells, and inhibition of myotube formation from myoblasts.
