Description

This small molecule from STEMCELL Technologies is a 2-thiazolidinone macrolide originally isolated from the Red Sea sponge Latrunculia magnifica. It forms a 1:1 molar complex with monomeric G-actin and inhibits actin polymerization in vitro, with a reported Kd of 0.2 μM (Coué et al., 1987). Because actins support cellular functions such as endocytosis, cell migration, and tumor invasion, the reagent is broadly used in cytoskeletal research, and published work has shown it disrupts the actin cytoskeleton in tumor cells (Hayot et al., 2006).

The compound is supplied as a 100 μg/mL solution in ethanol. Its chemical formula is C22H31NO5S, with a molecular weight of 421.6 g/mol and a reported purity of ≥ 95%. The CAS number for Latrunculin A is 76343-93-6, with the solvent ethanol registered under 64-17-5; an alternative designation is NSC 613011. According to the safety data sheet, the solution is highly flammable, with a flash point of 13 °C / 55 °F, may be harmful if inhaled, and is classified as toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects; the mixture is composed of 99.99% ethyl alcohol and 0.01% Latrunculin A.

For storage, the product should be kept at -20 °C, protected from prolonged exposure to light, and is reported stable as supplied for 12 months from the date of receipt. The reagent is intended for research use only and is not approved for human or animal diagnostic or therapeutic uses.
