STEMCELL Technologies supplies this mycotoxin originally characterized from Fusarium moniliforme. The compound is a potent inhibitor of sphingosine N-acyltransferase (ceramide synthase), acting with an IC₅₀ of 0.1 µM to disrupt the synthesis of sphingolipids, a key component of plasma membranes. It also inhibits several protein serine/threonine phosphatases, including PP1, PP2A, PP2B, PP2C, and PP5/T/K/H, with PP5 being the most sensitive at an IC₅₀ of 80 µM.

Published research applications include reversibly blocking cell proliferation and DNA synthesis in Swiss 3T3 fibroblasts, inhibiting hexadecylphosphocholine-induced apoptosis in human keratinocyte cell lines, disrupting dendrite growth in cerebellar Purkinje neurons, and inhibiting axonal branching in cultured hippocampal neurons. In cancer research, the compound attenuates the response of mouse lymphoma cell lines to platelet-activating factor and blocks apoptosis by inhibiting ceramide formation. When combined with Aflatoxin B1, it increases reactive oxygen species levels and oxidative damage in rat spleen cells.

Provided as a crystalline solid with a purity of ≥ 95%, the compound is soluble in PBS (pH 7.2) up to 25 mM and in methanol up to 13 mM. It is stable as supplied for 12 months from the date of receipt. The product is hazardous and intended for research use only.
