Description

Supplied by STEMCELL Technologies, this fungal toxin is a cell-permeable inhibitor of actin polymerization (Brenner & Korn). It also partially blocks HIV-1 release from infected human embryonic stem cells and lymphoma cells (Sasaki et al.). The compound has the alternative name NSC 209835 and CAS Number 22144-77-0. Its chemical formula is C30H37NO6 with a molecular weight of 507.6 g/mol, and the material is supplied at a purity of ≥ 95%.

Cytochalasin D is a crystalline solid that is stable at -20°C as supplied. The product should be protected from prolonged exposure to light and, for long-term storage, stored with a desiccant. Under these conditions it remains stable as supplied for 12 months from date of receipt. The compound is soluble in dichloromethane (DCM) at concentrations ≤ 19 mM and has low solubility in aqueous media. For use as a cell culture supplement, the stock solution should be diluted into culture medium immediately before use, and the final DCM concentration should be kept below 0.1% to avoid potential cell toxicity.

Published applications include reducing cell viability and inhibiting osteoblastic differentiation in human stromal stem cells (Chen et al.) and binding actin filaments to prevent tumor migration in human breast and lung cancer cells (Hayot et al.). This product is for research use only.
