STEMCELL Technologies supplies this macrolide antibiotic compound as a research-use autophagy inhibitor. It prevents the acidification of autophagosomes by inhibiting vacuolar H+-ATPase (V-ATPase). The compound has a chemical formula of C₃₅H₅₈O₉ with a molecular weight of 622.8 g/mol, a stated purity of ≥ 95%, and appears as a crystalline solid. It is soluble in DMSO and absolute ethanol at concentrations ≤ 8 mM.

As supplied, the product is stable at 5–20°C and, when stored with a desiccant and protected from prolonged light exposure, remains stable for 12 months from the date of receipt. For cell culture applications, stock solutions should be freshly prepared and diluted into culture medium immediately before use, with the final DMSO concentration kept at or below 0.1% to minimise potential cell toxicity.

Published research applications include its use in maintenance and self-renewal studies, where it has been shown to inhibit proteolytic degradation associated with autophagy in human mesenchymal stem cells, and in cancer research, where at low concentrations it inhibits autophagy and promotes apoptotic cell death in pediatric B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) cells.
