A potent selective estrogen receptor modulator, (Z)-4-Hydroxytamoxifen is the principal active metabolite of tamoxifen and is supplied by STEMCELL Technologies as a 5 mg single-use vial for cell biology, molecular genetics, and cancer research applications.

The compound is most commonly applied to trigger inducible Cre recombinase activity in CreERT2-expressing systems, enabling temporally controlled gene knockout, knock-in, or lineage tracing in cultured mammalian cells and in vivo models. It is also used to probe estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) signaling in breast cancer, reproductive biology, and endocrinology studies.

For CreERT2 activation, working concentrations typically range from 100 nM to 1 µM in culture medium, with treatment windows of 4 to 48 hours depending on the experimental design. Stock solutions are usually prepared in absolute ethanol or DMSO at 1 to 10 mM, aliquoted to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and stored at -20 °C protected from light to preserve activity. The dry compound remains stable when kept sealed at -20 °C and shielded from light.

Each unit contains 5 mg of the Z-isomer, with a molecular weight of 387.5 g/mol and CAS number 68047-06-3. The product is intended for research use only and is compatible with standard in vitro cell culture workflows as well as in vivo animal studies that require precise, transient modulation of estrogen receptor activity.
