The buffer is required for disrupting cells and releasing nucleic acids from soil matrices while beginning inhibitor control during sample processing. The reagent is offered as an individual component that can be purchased separately from the full PowerSoil DNA Isolation Kit.

As a component of the PowerSoil DNA Isolation Kit, the reagent participates in a bead-beating workflow that uses patented Inhibitor Removal Technology to extract microbial DNA from all soil types and other environmental samples. The 6.6 ml reagent supports protocols designed to deliver PCR-quality genomic DNA, including from difficult sample types with high humic acid content such as compost, sediment, and manure.

For storage and handling, the reagent is kept at room temperature, consistent with PowerSoil kit components that remain stable under those conditions for up to 2 years.
