STEMCELL Technologies offers this small molecule as a potent and selective ligand for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), binding to the PPARγ ligand-binding domain with a Kd of 43 nM (Lehmann et al.). It activates luciferase-based expression constructs PPARγ1 and PPARγ2 with EC₅₀ values of approximately 30 nM and 100 nM, respectively.

The compound is supplied as a crystalline solid with a purity of ≥ 98%, a molecular weight of 357.4 g/mol, and the chemical formula C₁₈H₁₉N₃O₃S (CAS 122320-73-4). It is also known by the alternative names Avandia and BRL 49653.

Published research applications include stimulating embryonic mouse neural stem cell proliferation while inhibiting neuronal differentiation, inducing adipocyte differentiation in C3H10T1/2 stem cells, promoting endothelial differentiation and inhibiting smooth muscle differentiation in angiogenic progenitor cells, and stimulating adipocyte differentiation while decreasing osteogenesis in mouse and human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells. The compound also enhances osteoclast formation in mouse bone marrow cells stimulated with RANKL and M-CSF. According to the safety data sheet, it causes serious eye irritation, is suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child, and is very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
