Resveratrol, 100 mg

From STEMCELL Technologies, Resveratrol is supplied as a 100 mg crystalline solid of ≥ 98% purity. The chemical name is 5-[(1E)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethenyl]-1,3-benzenediol; alternative designations include (E)-Resveratrol and trans-Resveratrol. The compound has the chemical formula C₁₄H₁₂O₃, a molecular weight of 228.2 g/mol, and CAS number 501-36-0. It is described as a potent phenolic antioxidant found in grapes and red wine, and is additionally reported to have antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory activity.

Resveratrol acts as a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), inhibiting the COX and peroxidase activities of COX-1 with ED₅₀ values of 15 µM and 3.7 µM, respectively, with essentially no inhibition of the COX activity of COX-2. The product is stable at -20°C as supplied and should be protected from prolonged exposure to light. Reported solubility limits are DMSO ≤ 280 mM, absolute ethanol ≤ 280 mM, and PBS (pH 7.2) ≤ 430 µM; for example, resuspending 100 mg in 43.8 mL of fresh DMSO yields a 10 mM stock solution. Stock solutions should be prepared fresh before use, stored in DMSO at -20°C, and aliquoted to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. When used as a cell culture supplement, the stock should be diluted into culture medium immediately before use, with final DMSO concentration kept at or below 0.1% to avoid potential cell toxicity.

Published research applications include maintenance and self-renewal—inhibition of pig preadipocyte differentiation into adipocytes, and promotion of self-renewal in human mesenchymal stem cells—as well as differentiation, where the compound induces osteogenic differentiation in human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell cultures and induces osteoblast differentiation while blocking adipocyte development in mouse mesenchymal stem cells and cultured primary rat bone marrow cells.
