Description

QIAGEN offers this eco-friendlier alternative to its standard RNeasy Mini Kit for total RNA extraction. The kit uses up to 60% less plastic and up to 57% less cardboard than the standard kit, and provides waste tubes made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic that can be reused throughout the procedure. Buffers are supplied as concentrates to reduce plastic by up to 90% per bottle, and protocols are delivered digitally rather than as printed inserts.

Designed for purification of total RNA from animal cells, animal tissues, bacteria, and yeast, as well as for cleanup of RNA from crude preps and enzymatic reactions, the kit combines the selective binding properties of a silica-based membrane with microspin technology. A specialized high-salt buffer system enables up to 100 µg of RNA longer than 200 nucleotides to bind to the RNeasy silica membrane, and RNA is eluted in 30–100 µL of RNase-free water. The procedure allows parallel processing of multiple samples in less than 30 minutes, replacing time-consuming methods such as CsCl step-gradient ultracentrifugation, alcohol precipitation, and phenol/chloroform extraction. The kit can be automated on the QIAcube Connect using RNeasy Mini Kit protocols.

According to the manufacturer, the kit is intended for molecular biology applications and is not intended for the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of a disease. Downstream applications include RNA-seq, RT-PCR and real-time RT-PCR, dPCR, differential display, cDNA synthesis, Northern, dot, and slot blot analyses, primer extension, Poly A+ RNA selection, RNase/S1 nuclease protection, and microarrays. The kit should be stored dry at room temperature (15–25°C) and is stable for at least 12 months after delivery. Note that Buffer RLT contains guanidine thiocyanate and Buffer RW1 contains a small amount of guanidine thiocyanate; these are not compatible with disinfectants containing bleach.
