STEMCELL Technologies supplies a recombinant form of mouse tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) designated for use as a laboratory reagent. According to the supplier, TNF-α facilitates the adhesion of neutrophils, monocytes, and memory T cells to activated platelets and endothelial cells, and the protein is used in research related to inflammation, apoptosis, NF-κB signalling and immune activation in vitro.

Biological activity is tested by the ability of the recombinant protein to induce cytolysis of L929 cells growing in the presence of actinomycin D, with cell viability measured after 19 hours of culture using a fluorometric assay; the EC50 is defined as the effective concentration at which cell viability is 50% of maximum. SDS-PAGE analysis under reducing and non-reducing conditions, visualized by Coomassie Blue staining, shows a predicted molecular mass of 17.4 kDa.
