STEMCELL Technologies supplies a recombinant mouse chemokine used in research on cell migration and signaling. Stromal cell-derived factor 1 alpha (SDF-1α) is a member of the CXC group of chemokines that binds the G-protein coupled receptor CXCR4 to regulate migration, proliferation, differentiation, and survival of cell types including hematopoietic stem cells, B cells, and T cells. The protein is produced by bone marrow stromal cells, osteoblasts, endothelial cells, and neuronal cells, and was first identified as the pre-B-cell growth-stimulating factor (PBSF) in the mouse bone marrow-derived stromal cell line, PA6.

The factor primarily regulates cell motility during development and adulthood. Reported roles include the homing of hematopoietic stem cells and neutrophils to fetal bone marrow during ontogeny, the recruitment of endothelial progenitor cells from bone marrow during angiogenesis, the homing of primordial germ cells to gonads, the migration of granule cells in the cerebellum during neurogenesis, and the migration of breast cancer cells to sites of metastasis.

Biological activity is determined by the ability of the recombinant protein to mobilize Ca²⁺ in CHOK1/Gα15/hCXCR4 cells, measured using a fluorometric assay. The EC50, defined as the effective concentration at which Ca²⁺ mobilization is 50% of maximum, is less than 1.5 μg/mL. Purity is verified by SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions, visualized by Coomassie Blue staining.
