SCF is described as an early-acting cytokine that plays a pivotal role in the regulation of embryonic and adult hematopoiesis, and it supports research applications in stem cell identification and isolation workflows.

Biological activity of the Mouse Recombinant SCF was assessed by its ability to promote the proliferation of TF-1 cells, with cell proliferation measured after 65 hours of culture using a fluorometric assay method. The EC50 is defined as the effective concentration of the growth factor at which cell proliferation reaches 50% of maximum, and in the cited example the EC50 was 5.7 - 8.6 ng/mL. SDS-PAGE analysis under reducing and non-reducing conditions, visualized by Coomassie Blue staining, was performed with 1 μg of the protein, which has a predicted molecular mass of 18.4 kDa.
