STEMCELL Technologies offers a research reagent whose activity has been characterized in cell-based assays. The protein IL-6 stimulates proliferation and differentiation of T cells, stimulates the formation of osteoclasts, and affects hepatocytes, cardiomyocytes, and macrophages.

Biological activity was tested by its ability to promote the proliferation of 7TD1 cells. Cell proliferation was measured after 66 hours of culture using a fluorometric assay method. The EC50 is defined as the effective concentration of the growth factor at which cell proliferation is at 50% of maximum; in the reported assay the EC50 was 2.4 - 3.6 pg/mL. The product has a predicted molecular mass of 21.9 kDa.

For purity analysis, 1 μg of Mouse Recombinant IL-6 was resolved with SDS-PAGE under reducing (+) and non-reducing (-) conditions and visualized by Coomassie Blue staining.
