Description

From STEMCELL Technologies, Mouse Recombinant IL-5 (Interleukin 5) is a member of the short-chain 4-α-helical bundle subset of hematopoietic cytokines. It is also known by the alternative names B cell differentiation factor II, BCDFII, EDF, Eosinophil differentiation factor, and TFR. IL-5 binds to a specific α receptor, which in turn recruits the common β receptor to initiate signaling via the JAK/STAT and MAPK pathways.

IL-5 is produced by Th2 cells, eosinophils, activated mast cells, and ILC2 cells, and it affects the differentiation, activation, and survival of eosinophils, thereby playing an important role in allergic inflammation, asthma, and parasite immunity. Stimulation of eosinophils with IL-5 leads to their activation, upregulation of CD11b expression, and inhibition of apoptosis.

The recombinant protein is expressed in E. coli with a predicted molecular mass of 26.3 kDa (UniProt accession P04401) and a purity of ≥ 95%. Endotoxin levels are ≤ 1 EU/μg protein as measured by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis. Its specific activity is ≥ 5 x 10^5 units/mg (EC50 ≤ 2 ng/mL), as determined by a cell proliferation assay using TF-1 cells, with a representative EC50 range of 0.15 - 0.22 ng/mL measured after 70 hours of culture. The lyophilized product is formulated from a sterile-filtered aqueous solution containing sodium bicarbonate at pH 9.0. It should be stored at -20°C to -80°C and is stable as supplied for 12 months from the date of receipt.
