Description

A lyophilized recombinant cytokine from STEMCELL Technologies, produced in E. coli and supplied as a solid powder for research use only. Interleukin-33 (IL-33), also known as IL-1F11, is a pro-inflammatory member of the IL-1 family that signals through the ST2 receptor, activating NF-κB and MAPK pathways.

IL-33 is expressed by epithelial cells, smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts, and several immune cell populations including basophils, mast cells, eosinophils, natural helper cells, group 2 innate lymphoid cells, dendritic cells, and activated macrophages. It contributes to allergic inflammation by stimulating production of the cytokines IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 in Th2 cells, and supports host defense against microbial and viral infections. Within the central nervous system, IL-33 is produced by endothelial cells and astrocytes, where it induces proliferation of microglia and mediates production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Specifications include a predicted molecular mass of 17.5 kDa, purity ≥ 95% as resolved by SDS-PAGE, and an endotoxin level ≤ 0.2 EU/μg protein by kinetic LAL analysis. Biological activity is ≥ 2 x 10^6 units/mg with an EC50 ≤ 0.5 ng/mL, as determined by a cell proliferation assay using D10S cells. The protein is lyophilized from sterile-filtered phosphate-buffered saline containing EDTA, and should be stored at -20°C to -80°C, remaining stable for 12 months from the date of receipt when supplied.
