According to the manufacturer, IL-22 stimulates the expression of antimicrobial peptides from epithelial cells, thereby hindering bacterial infections. The cytokine is referenced alongside interferon-gamma, interleukin 10, and tumor necrosis factor alpha in the supplier's related materials.

Biological activity of the recombinant protein is evaluated by its ability to induce IL-10 production in COLO 205 cells, with IL-10 secretion measured after 4 days of culture using a fluorometric assay method. The EDC50, defined as the effective concentration at which IL-10 production reaches 50% of maximum, is 0.15 - 0.23 ng/mL. The protein has a predicted molecular mass of 16.8 kDa, and 1 μg analyzed by SDS-PAGE under reducing (+) and non-reducing (−) conditions can be visualized by Coomassie Blue staining.
