STEMCELL Technologies supplies this Mouse Recombinant IL-13 as a type I cytokine with a predicted molecular mass of 12.3 kDa, expressed in E. coli. The lyophilized preparation is formulated in a sterile-filtered solution containing 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid and demonstrates ≥ 95% purity, with an endotoxin level of ≤ 1 EU/μg protein. Biological activity was confirmed by its ability to promote proliferation of TF-1 cells, with cell proliferation measured after 66 hours of culture using a fluorometric assay method; the EC50 is 2.3 - 3.4 ng/mL. Specific activity is ≥ 1 x 10^5 units/mg (EC50 ≤ 0.01 μg/mL).

IL-13 signals through type I cytokine receptors to activate JAK/STAT and IRS-1/IRS-2 pathways. It is produced by T cells and innate lymphoid cells and inhibits production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, prostaglandins, and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species by monocytes and macrophages. Unlike its role in human B cells, IL-13 has no effect on mouse B cell development and function. The cytokine promotes eosinophil survival, activation, and recruitment and activates mast cells. It regulates airway hyperresponsiveness, allergic inflammation, tissue eosinophilia, goblet cell hyperplasia, gastrointestinal parasite expulsion, intracellular parasitism, tissue remodeling, tumor cell growth, and fibrosis, and induces hypercontractility of smooth muscles by acting directly on muscle cells and on the enteric nerves. Cross-reactivity is reported for human and rat.

The vial should be centrifuged before opening and stored at -20°C to -80°C; the product is stable as supplied for 12 months from the date of receipt. Reconstitute in 20 mM hydrochloric acid to at least 0.1 mg/mL by pipetting the solution down the sides of the vial; do not vortex. For research use only.
