STEMCELL Technologies supplies a recombinant polypeptide belonging to the insulin-like growth factor family, structurally similar to proinsulin. The product is manufactured in E. coli and lyophilized after dialysis against phosphate-buffered saline, with purity reported as ≥ 95%. The preparation is supplied as a solid powder and is not classified as hazardous under the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard or the Globally Harmonized System.

The growth factor binds the IGF-1 receptor and is described as a potent activator of the PI3K/AKT pathway that also activates ERK1/2 signaling. It is required for embryonic development and is produced mainly in the liver in response to hepatocyte growth hormone. In the absence of insulin, it supports the maintenance of human pluripotent stem cells. Together with interleukin-3, it stimulates differentiation and proliferation of myeloid cells and regulates lymphopoiesis by acting on T and B cells in lymphoid organs. The molecule shows cross-reactivity with human and rat samples, and is referenced under the alternative names IBP1, IGFRIA, IGFRIB, IGF1A, Mechano growth factor, MGF, and Somatomedin C (UniProt accession P05017).

Specifications quoted from the manufacturer's product sheet include a predicted molecular mass of 7.8 kDa, a specific activity of ≥ 1 x 10^5 units/mg, and an EC50 ≤ 10 ng/mL in a cell proliferation assay using FDC-P1 cells, with cell proliferation measured by a fluorometric method. Endotoxin level is ≤ 0.2 EU/μg protein by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate analysis. The product is stable for 12 months from date of receipt when stored at -80°C, and is intended for research use only.
