Description

Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), also known as type II interferon, is a cytokine produced by T and NK cells and, in smaller amounts, by dendritic cells and macrophages. This recombinant mouse version, supplied by STEMCELL Technologies, is expressed in E. coli, carries UniProt accession P01580, and has a predicted molecular mass of 15.7 kDa. The product is provided as a lyophilized powder prepared from a sterile-filtered aqueous solution of sodium phosphate and sodium chloride at pH 7.5.

IFN-γ binds a cell-surface receptor complex and signals through the JAK/STAT pathway, activating transcription of genes involved in diverse immunological functions. It stimulates the antimicrobial and anti-tumor activity of macrophages, NK cells, and neutrophils, enhances MHC class I and II expression on dendritic cells and mononuclear phagocytes, promotes IL-12 production by dendritic cells, and in B cells supports survival and growth while shifting proliferation toward differentiation. It also favors Th1 over Th2 development and supports monocyte differentiation and function.

Purity is ≥ 95% by SDS-PAGE analysis. In an example viral challenge assay using encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus on L929 cells, the EC50 was determined to be 0.22 ng/mL, corresponding to a specific activity of 4.3 x 10^7 units/mg after normalization to an internal standard. Cross-reactivity is reported for human and rat samples. The lyophilized product should be stored at -20°C to -80°C and remains stable for 12 months from the date of receipt as supplied.
