Description

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a key signaling protein and the founding member of the EGF family, characterized by high-affinity binding to EGF receptors (EGFRs) and the production of mitogenic responses. The Mouse Recombinant EGF from STEMCELL Technologies is expressed in E. coli and purified to ≥ 95% purity, supplied as a lyophilized preparation following dialysis against phosphate-buffered saline.

This recombinant protein promotes EGFR dimerization and activates downstream signaling pathways including PI3K, ERK1/2, JAK/STAT, β-catenin, and calcium signaling. EGF is secreted by gut-associated salivary and Brunner's glands and stimulates cell proliferation and differentiation in rodent and neonatal human intestine. In research applications, it can stimulate proliferation of mouse embryonic stem cells or induce the terminal differentiation and growth inhibition of A431 cells.

Biological activity is determined by a cell proliferation assay using BALB/c 3T3 cells, with a specific activity of ≥ 1 x 10^7 units/mg and an EC50 of ≤ 0.1 ng/mL. The protein has a predicted molecular mass of 6.2 kDa (UniProt accession P01132) and is reactive with human, rat, and mouse samples. Endotoxin levels are ≤ 0.2 EU/μg as measured by kinetic LAL analysis. The vial should be centrifuged before opening and reconstituted in sterile water to at least 0.1 mg/mL without vortexing. According to the manufacturer, the product is stable as supplied for 12 months from the date of receipt and is intended for research use only; STEMCELL Technologies' quality management system is certified to ISO 13485.
