Ionomycin, 5 mg

A calcium ionophore reagent supplied by STEMCELL Technologies, this compound is derived from Streptomyces conglobatus and is used as a research tool to rapidly raise intracellular calcium levels and to study calcium transport across biological membranes (S2). It is described as a more effective Ca++ ionophore than A23187, but less effective at binding and carrying Mg++ (S2). The molecule can activate and prime the polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) oxidase and, in conjunction with Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), is used to activate T cells, with an IC50 of 5.8 nM reported for this application (S2).

The product is provided as a 10 mg/mL solution in ethanol, with a molecular weight of 709 g/mol and a stated purity of ≥95% (S2). According to the manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet, the solution is classified as a highly flammable liquid and vapour (flash point 14°C, closed cup) and may be harmful if swallowed or cause eye irritation; the SDS also notes the material is hygroscopic (S1). For stability, the product should be stored at -20°C, protected from prolonged exposure to light, and is stated to remain stable as supplied for 12 months from date of receipt (S2).
