Ionomycin, 1 mg

A calcium ionophore research reagent from STEMCELL Technologies. Ionomycin free acid is derived from Streptomyces conglobatus and is used to rapidly raise intracellular calcium levels and to study calcium transport across biological membranes by inducing the release of cytosolic calcium stores. It is described as a more effective Ca²⁺ ionophore than A23187, but less effective at binding and carrying Mg²⁺. The compound activates and primes the polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) oxidase and is used in conjunction with Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) for the activation of T cells (IC₅₀ = 5.8 nM). Published applications include activating T cells from human, mouse, or rat sources, in combination with PMA, to express cytokines including IL-17, IL-4, IL-10, and IL-2.

Supplied as a 10 mg/mL solution in ethanol with a stated purity of ≥ 95%. The molecular formula is C₄₁H₇₂O₉, the molecular weight is 709 g/mol, and the CAS number is 56092-81-0 (alternative name: SQ 23377). The product is stable at -20°C as supplied, should be protected from prolonged exposure to light, and remains stable for 12 months from the date of receipt.
