A member of the TGF-β superfamily, this human recombinant protein from STEMCELL Technologies regulates diverse cellular phenotypes. It signals through serine-threonine kinase type I and II receptors and activates signal transduction via SMAD family proteins, governing functions such as cell proliferation, differentiation, wound healing, apoptosis, and metabolism. Studies in mice with TGF-β2 deletions have revealed defects in the development of cardiac, lung, craniofacial, limb, eye, ear, and urogenital systems, underscoring its role in developmental processes.

The protein is produced in human cells and lyophilized from a filtered solution containing hydrochloric acid. It carries alternative designations including BSC-1 cell growth inhibitor, Cetermin, Glioblastoma-derived T-cell suppressor factor, G-TSF, Polyergin, and TGFB2 (Accession Number P61812), with a predicted molecular mass of 12.7 kDa and a purity of ≥ 95%. Bioactivity is confirmed by the ability to inhibit the IL-4-dependent proliferation of TF-1 human erythroleukemic cells, with a specific activity of ≥ 5.5 x 10^6 units/mg and an EC50 of ≤ 0.18 ng/mL. Endotoxin levels are ≤ 1 EU/μg protein as measured by kinetic LAL analysis.

The product should be stored at -80°C and remains stable as supplied for 12 months from date of receipt. Before opening, the vial should be centrifuged, then reconstituted in sterile water to at least 0.1 mg/mL by pipetting the solution down the sides of the vial; vortexing should be avoided.
